I'm going to go ahead and use the rules here for gaze attacks unless someone can point out page numbers and the name of the rulebooks that would indicate that the information here on this website is incorrect: www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:GazeLooking it over, it would appear that monsters with a gaze attack basically get to use it as a "free action".. that is unless you're taking pains to avoid looking a monster in the eyes as you fight (and suffering the appropriate penalties if you don't look said monster in the eyes since you're not really letting yourself see "the whole picture" during the fight so to speak - basically you're distracting yourself during a pitched battle for your life) you need to make a save each round to avoid the effects of the gaze attack.

thanks for the link darkalloy .. pirateking , here's where I draw the whole gaze as a free action thing from .. if you check the link above darkalloy gave it says " A creature with a gaze attack can actively attempt to use its gaze as an attack action. The creature simply chooses a target within range, and that opponent must attempt a saving throw. If the target has chosen to defend against the gaze as discussed above, the opponent gets a chance to avoid the saving throw (either 50% chance for averting eyes or 100% chance for shutting eyes). It is possible for an opponent to save against a creature’s gaze twice during the same round, once before its own action and once during the creature’s action. " By " it is possible for an opponent to save against a creature's gaze twice during the round" I'm taking that to mean the first gaze attack is basically a free action.. if you check page 294 of the dungeon master's guide "gaze attack" (version 3.5 of the book) you'll see what the online SRD link mentions above is basically a word - for - word repeat of what's in the DMG ..

Exactly, it's a free action but it can force it as it's attack.
