.. so after the events of the game session that took place this past Tuesday Sept 14th it's occurred to me the bad guys are a tad bit too powerful , which in turn slows combat down for one thing because it takes forever to defeat them (and for another thing because my experience level with FG hasn't risen to the point where I can quickly run through the bad guy's attacks and apply them yet  ) .... I do plan on taking steps to fix this so we can speed up combat and adjust the power level problem.. you'll see this as early as the coming next FG game session (if you follow the hints given to you  ) .. in Adam's case with the Vow of Poverty he might have to wait until the end of the current module but I have stuff in store for him too when he levels up that will make him particularly bad-ass  ... |

.. to clarify a bit further.. I can't make a "quick fix" available to Adam until he levels up given the whole vow of poverty thing .. but I think I can safely say that Adam will be pretty bad-ass after he levels up (which will happen sooner than you guys think if you take the interrogation of the draconian thread to heart and make a beeline for the right places in Xak Tsaroth  ) |

Instead of adjusting the characters, how about just dropping the number of enemies to adjust? It reduces the challenge rating (a very useful measure of how difficult a fight is going to be) and makes for one less minion to keep track of. If all the encounters are like that, I'd say re-evaluate the xp rate. For many of these encounters run in 'baseline' 3.5, we would have leveled multiple times after the fights we've had. We might have leveled from the Bozaks alone, had we won. I know it's a published adventure, but those Bozaks were likely 6 HD plus sorcerer spells, that's 6 likely CR 5+ creatures or an encounter level of 10! Our highest level character is 5. This is true Mal, If'n we did get the Xp for actually killing/capturing what we've we would've leveled up at least once. Right now running it starit form the book on 3.5 kinda makes it a adventure full of "Hey look a pool of acid... Who wants to go for a swim?" "Oooh I know how to make some awesome mixed drinks wiht acid too anyone want some?" type battles.

Yeah I know guys I'm sorry the xp rate seems rather unfair to say the least.. but it's the penalty for using modules originally written a while ago using first edition d and d rules where it took much longer to advance in terms of required xp points (to be brutally honest the people who wrote up the module say I'm only supposed to award xp once after several game sessions once you complete the "major goal" no matter how many monsters you fight , and even then only enough xp to advance people to the next level ) ... ... I don't know what to say other than advancement will be slow in this campaign .. this is one reason I hand out so many RP points, to purchase feats, skills and other ability point bumps to ease the pain so to speak.. still if people feel strongly enough about it to leave the campaign it will make this particular DM cry after all the hard work I put into it with the subplots I drew up and the forum stuff I've set up and so on (seriously I don't want to see anyone go ) but I'll understand if the pre-published module stuff isn't a player's cup of tea... there just isn't that much more I can do as far as messing with the campaign without creating more of a workload for myself than I can manage right now with the munchkins I'm keeping an eye on and all .... Having said that if a player objects so strongly that they feel the need to leave the campaign I will totally understand.. a sound-off on who wants to stay and who wants to go would be great on this post, if nothing else just to reassure me or at least warn me in advance if anyone wants to leave ... And yes you lost the first time when you were webbed and put to sleep but you won the decisive battle remember? You have the four bozak prisoners to prove it .. as nydhog said in his whispers to malkav the blue crystal staff is what makes the big difference .. once you started using it in combat you pretty much kicked butt ... and hopefully you'll be having a figher/wizard (Flak's PC) joining you shortly to bring you back up to six PC's again ... I do plan on taking steps to give PC's an added "boost" so PC's don't seem so wimpy , as soon as our next FG game session actually if you guys proceed to explore the right area of Xak Tsaroth .. it will help everyone except Adam (whom I know has the vow of poverty feat so that handicaps my ability to give him a "quick fix", but there's something I can do for him when he levels up above and beyond the bonus class level for using the disks of mishkaal) ... But yep I do understand, higher combat rating = longer, more drawn out battles which can be quite boring .. I'll be working that aspect too ... |

don't worry you're heading in the right direction, if not I'd drop hints .. but yeah you're already "on task" so to speak .. liquid monk's belt eh? Interesting I'll have to think on that one.. good idea, thanks ! But I do have something cool planned for him when he levels up that should help him out ... basically his complaint is that he's all defense no offense due to the monk and vow of poverty character build ... |

It's not about who's staying or leaving the campaign. I am a very vocal complainer when fights are too difficult because it frusterates me. But sometimes it's a plot thing and that's that. What I'm saying is that if every fight is too difficult, you are the GM and you can adjust them with little-to no work on your part. You just subtract enemies. One less foe to track in FG. If you are happy with difficult fights or that one was an exception, then obviously keep going. But you are not a slave to the published material - if you see things going in a direction you don't like: change it! For myself I will continue to make cheesier characters until they meet the challenge of the monsters. If I can't make a character that can be productive in the epic fights then I'll tell you (as I have). If I find that Adam is not up to par with the fights, I'll make a more effective character. I made up Adam because this is a heavy RP game - I didn't feel I had to be min-maxed to contribute. If we all get an ass-kicking every session, I guess I'll just settle in and take it. If only Adam does, I'll make a better character with an equally detailed history. But I don't want to coddle Adam along if he can't hack it. That's not necessary. Well for Adam you could give a potion which does something nice for him. If you can tolerate poor Adam not being very good at landing hits (and I can see how that would be difficult given the level adjustment and what his level as a monk really is ) until he levels up I can promise he'll become much more bad-ass once he levels up - you'll see the difference after he levels up in other words (though that might not be for a few more game sessions .. the vow of poverty thing stops me from making it a more "quick fix" scenario ) .. |
