Sorcerers and Bards are able to spontanteously cast magic without the need for spellbooks ... here's how the dragonlance campaign setting treats it (check the dragonlance campaign setting sourcebook and towers of high sorcery books for more info on this ) ... basically "wild magic" or "chaos magic".. being born with the gift of magic without any special need to train in it.. was the province of sorcerers (and I'm going to extend that definition to include bards) a long time ago.. then there were some VERY intense magical wars between sorcerers that threatened to literally tear the world apart... the gods whisked away the sorcerers and basically said " Look, we're setting up the Towers of High Sorcery to control this sort of thing.. the unrestrained and uncontrolled use of magic can destroy the world , just like you almost did".. the sorcerers agreed and thereafter there were only wizards.. so basically there haven't been any sorcerers or spell casting bards for a LONG time since then as in many, many centuries.
Rin being able to spontaneously cast spells just like that marks him as the first of his kind in many centuries.. his half-dwarf mentor helped guide him along the path, gave him a few tips, but in the end Rin could probably have mastered it given time even without the half-dwarf's help...
New game rule I'd like to add... occasionally "wild magic" manifests itself around these bards or sorcerers, often manifestations of said bard or sorcerer's unconsciousness.. sometimes it helps, sometimes it hinders, sometimes it does both at the same time.. but just one more thing to make Rin's life.. interesting.. yeah, that's the word, INTERESTING ...
(note that this sort of "wild magic" manifestation does NOT take place around wizards nor around the witches of Chislev, only bards or sorcerers) ...
