All Ability scores start at 8 except for Appearance, a new Ability that all PC’s and NPC’s possess ... it basically describes how good looking you are.... Appearance ability score modifiers stack with Charisma modifiers for your Bluff, Diplomacy, Performance and Gather Information rolls (basically anything where you have to sway someone towards a positive impression and/or cooperating with you without relying on intimidation).
– your starting Appearance depends on your race as detailed below:
Other creatures not listed below (except ugly creatures below 10 appearance) – see table at end of book of erotic fantasy with appearance listings for various creatures and templates (half celestials get +4 to appearance and half fiends -4 for example per DMG – does not apply to half devils and half demons from Book of Erotic Fantasy however, different template than DMG one)
Human, Dwarf (Hill), Dwarf (Mountain), Elf (Kagonesti), Half Elf, Sea Elf, Gnome, Kender, Centaur, Kyrie, Kenku – starting Appearance of 14.
Elf (Qualinesti), Half Dragon - starting Appearance of 16
Elf (Silvanesti), Irda (High Ogre), Phaethon, Half Celestial, Half Fiend, feykissed (or any other fey ancestry), half devil, half demon– starting Appearance of 18
Draconian (any), Dwarf (Gully), Half Orge, Ogre, Minotaur, Ursoi, Half giant, giantborn (other races known for being ugly (medusa et cetera) ) : This can be handled two ways:
starting Appearance of 11 ; or,
starting Appearance of 14 at no extra cost in Ability score points, meaning that this is either a particularly handsome/beautiful specimen of her/his race (affecting the reactions of others of said race as a result – centaurs may rib the PC about being a “pretty boy” or be hostile towards him when he gets all the attention from female centaurs, ogres will react with jealousy and hatred, minotaurs may deride the “pretty boy” and challenge him to a fight to “prove” himself, et cet) … OR .. something happened in the character’s history that resulted in the character being a very good looking member of his/her race… a wizard or witch with access to a Polymorph Other spell the character has had dealings with, or the character has ancestry stemming from another race (mother, father or grandparent was human, elven, Irda ( the high ogres), et cet) that explains the better than average looks. It can be assumed that there will be complications as a result – normal members of the character’s race will sneer at the “pretty boy / girl” or outright attack the character, the wizard who transformed the character might show up later on looking to call in the favor the wizard did for the character, et cet – but that’s what makes playing such characters fun to begin with!
When generating ability scores during character creation note that one point spent on Appearance gives you a plus two on your Appearance score (regardless of how high your Appearance score currently is e.g. unlike the other Ability scores you don’t pay a higher than normal cost to boost Appearance if your Appearance is already 14 or higher) – thus spending one point at character generation gives you a plus two in Appearance, two points spent on Appearance gives plus 4 to your Appearance score, three points spent on Appearance gives plus 6 instead and four points spent on Appearance gives plus 8 to your Appearance score (the cost to increase other Ability scores is normal as per the rules in the Dungeon Master’s Guide under “character creation” ) ….
UPDATE - you get an additional point to spend on your ability scores at 4th level, 8th level et cetera... if you choose to put that point into Appearance increase your Appearance by 2 points instead ... if you want to use RP points to increase Appearance every 300 Role Playing points spent increases appearance by 2 points instead of the usual one point if spent on any other ability score (strength, intelligence et cet) ... in either case we'd need an in-game explanation as to why the PC's looks suddenly changed but we could probably come up with one if you give me a heads up ahead of time ...
An Appearance score of 10 to 11 means you have average looks, 12 to 13 indicates some might find you attractive while others would not , you’re “ on the edge” and could go either way (Glenn Close when she was in Fatal Attraction ), 14 to 15 in Appearance indicates that you are definitely considered “ cute “ (to use modern day phrases), a score of 16 to 17 indicates that you are “ hot “ and have model level beauty, a score of 18 to 19 indicates the pinnacle of beauty, something that would make one famous in the modern world (Marilyn Monroe, Betty Page, et cetera ) … 20 is the absolute maximum any mortal can be born with, breathtakingly good looking (and yes mikker0 your "30" appearance is totally ok - it means you're pretty much beyond human in your good looks for your PC )... aside from mikker0 however there are other races and beings.. nymphs or a succubus for example.. who can have appearance scores above 20 to reflect their other-worldly nature.
UPDATE - new option - if you want to run an ugly character you can do so too .... basically if your starting Appearance ability score is "14" or higher , you have the option of voluntarily lowering it to a score of "8" ... basically you're not so hideously deformed that small children run away from you screaming in terror but you're not that attractive either .. in return you get an additional 1 point added to those 32 ability score points you spend when first creating a character.. this update pretty much only affects you if you're writing up a new character..
