The "a really, really informal history of Krynn" thread goes into more detail about the witches but you should be aware that the witches are present and active in various woodland forests across the continent of Ansalon, hidden away from the rest of society.
The witches are all basically members of the Druid character class who have devoted themselves to Chislev, the Neutral Goddess of nature... they are patterned largely after the modern pagan/witchcraft religion of today. Various covens of witches can be Neutral Good, pure Neutral, or Neutral Evil in alignment (the latter group are basically eco-terrorists who take no prisoners). Their numbers are made up primarily of elves, humans and half-elves. Given the large number of long-lived elves among their ranks who broke their ties with the Tower of High Sorcery, the witches have had ample opportunity to learn arcane spells as well.... needless to say the Tower is not happy about this and seeks to curtail and control the witches to no avail... Chislev actively interferes to hamper the Tower's efforts and the witches have enough spies inside the Tower to keep them appraised of the Tower's activities.
The witches are predominantly female though there are a number of very happy male witches (warlocks) among their covens... spoiled and pampered as the "cute baby boy" by their elders and finding any number of willing partners given the witches' reverence of fertility and all that goes with it once they reach adolescence, warlocks are pretty much among the happiest, most well adjusted men on the face of Krynn. The witches also maintain undercover agents or "spies" in the outside world who report back to the coven... When they need to reproduce if there's no one who strikes her fancy in the coven or no suitable satyr, centaur, et cetera (a number of witches have the "feykissed" template from the book of erotic fantay pdf) a witch will join the outside world temporarily, take a lover, then vanish in the middle of the night once she is pregnant.
Most but not all of the members of the coven are full-fledged witches, some have found sanctuary and protection under the witches' care. Anyone who wants to leave the coven is free to do so but they will have their memories of the coven (only) magically erased to protect the coven's safety.
