Yep , that's right I actually started a thread on birth control ! Folks if someone does not have the Book of Erotic Fantasy (which is not an "official " WOTC book but I do use it ) let me know and I'll make sure you get a copy of it... there is one spell from there that is definitely worth reprinting.. if you do not declare, either in an FG game session or on the forums, that you did not cast this spell then it's assumed your PC did not make use of it (though as a one-time deal I will let anyone reading this who's already "done the deed" to retroactively declare they were using it ... afterward though it's up to players to remember ) ... see below the spell description for other birth control options too :
" Block the Seed"
Abjuration
Level: zero level spell for bards, clerics, sorcerers, wizards or the body domain (if you don't get zero level spells for some reason assume you can cast it as a first level spell.. this part is an "official" rule change from what's listed in the book)
Components : V, S, M
Casting time: 1 action
Range: Personal
Target: You
Duration: 1 day/level
You are incapable of getting someone pregnant or becoming impregnated for the duration of the spell. You are still vunerable to sexually transmitted diseases unless protective measures are taken.
Material component: a lemon rind.
It's pretty much common knowledge to the general populace that just about any mage can perform the "block the seed" spell... Rin would instinctively know he can cast it (he'll have to decide if he wants to swap it for any one of the current zero level spells he's "allowed" to know as a bard) .. clerics and other divine spellcasters would also instinctively know they can cast it as well. Serinda if you so choose you can start out with this as a bonus zero level spell in your spellbook bestowed by your worried magical tutor ... Catrain would definitely have made sure it was in Sangrias's spellbook with only a smirk by way of reply when Sangrias responded " I never trust a pretty face anyways" ...
For those who cannot cast spells and/or want to save their spell slots for something else, as a one time deal I will let you "retroactively" declare that you are in possession of these items (long as you have the coin for it ) since I didn't let people know about this until now (my bad)... again I will allow a one-time retroactive " I was using it ! " pass on these items since I'm only posting this topic now for "deeds performed in the past" .... after this however if you don't declare on the forum or an FG game session that you're using this I will assume you didn't .. assume for simplicity everything below is "zero" weight :
- condom, improvised.. zero cost but only 5 percent chance of preventing pregnancy
- single condom, common (sheepskin) ... 1 silver piece, 70 percent chance chance of preventing pregnancy
- single condom, masterwork (rubber) ... 10 steel pieces (remember we use steel instead of gold pieces in Krynn), 85 percent chance of preventing pregnancy.
- Diaphgram, improvised.. zero cost but only 20 percent chance to prevent pregnancy
- Diaphgram, Common.. 4 silver pieces , 70 percent chance to prevent pregnancy, can be used over and over again
- Diaphgram, masterwork (custom made to user)... 15 steel pieces, 80 percent chance to avoid pregnancy, can be used over and over again
- Pessiaries are the medieval version of spermicide, a masterwork version being one made of superior ingredients... they are most often used in combination with other birth control methods (basically they "stack" with other birth control method percentages to avoid pregnancy to a maximum of 99 percent chance to avoid pregnancy) but if you're feeling really lucky you can use them as a birth control method by themselves...
- common , 5 silver pieces, 10 percent chance to avoid pregnancy
- superior, 5 gold pieces, 20 percent chance to avoid pregnancy
-birth shield ... herbal concoction that renders anyone, male or female, mostly infertile (95 percent chance to avoid pregnancy) for 4d6+6 days, 2 steel pieces
Except in the case of pessiaries these methods do not "stack"... I check each seperately.. for example two partners are involved, one wearing a common condom one wearing a common diaphgram.. there's a 70 percent chance of the condom preventing pregnancy which I check "by itself" and there's a 70 percent chance that the diaphgram prevents pregnancy, which I also check seperately.. if either one succeeds no babies !
As far as whether or not you can get someone pregnant despite being of a different race.. as far as I'm concerned ALL the PC's in the group can potentially "interbreed" (for lack of a better word) with each other in the case of a male and a female, different race or no .... either act responsibly or stock up on diapers !
UPDATE - Not sure if you guys have the book of erotic fantasy ? if you don't let me know and I'll shoot you the pdf via dropbox... see pages 121-122 of that book.. it IS in fact possible (sez in there you need to make a DM ruling so I'm making one now ) for a female polymorphed into a male to produce viable sperm, thus impregnating another female. Alternately a male polymorphed into a female... or for that matter a female polymorphed into a female capable of reproduction.... can have babies as long as you stay in that polymorphed form up through the actual delivery of the baby, otherwise you run into complications (again see pages 121-122)
