The drow were only mentioned once in Dragonlance canon.. Raistlin had to fight one during his Test in the Tower of High Sorcery.... although they don't appear in the Dragonlance Campaign Setting I think they would be a neat addition to the campaign so they DO exist with the following alterations (though for the most part they follow the rules and descriptions given for them in the various wizards of the coast sourcebooks).
- one thousand years ago a splinter group of elves turned to the worship of Takhisis (who takes the place of Lolth as the goddess the dark elves worship) .. needless to say the Good aligned elves did not take kindly to this.. war erupted between the two races and the ancestors of the dark elves retreated far, FAR underground to the caverns deep underneath Krynn... there they encountered hostile creatures (mind flayers and all the other creatures who are normally in the Underdark) , offshoots of the original races of Krynn (deep gnomes, dark dwarves... distant relations of the "normal" dark dwarves detailed in the Dragonlance Campaign Setting) ... indeed these creatures were located so far underground that no one had ever heard of them before... the dark elves took their place , warring with the above mentioend Under-dark races and gradually evolved into their current state.....
The dark elves are so busy fighting a never ending battle against the other denizens of the underdark that few have been able to respond to their Dark Queen's call given recent developments... still, there are a select few who will answer Takhisis's call and become active in the world far above.
Dark elves are for the most part Lawful Evil given the alignment of their deity (so their society is a bit more structured than what's given in the original WOTC sourcebooks ) .... surface elves have heard legends of the dark elves and believe in their existence, so a surface elf would immediately recognize one for what it is... unless you can pass a rather high DC 30 knowledge check of some sort however (knowledge arcana for example or knowledge history) , the average person viewing a dark elf might react with confusion.. " Elves aren't supposed to be THAT dark are they?!?"...
