Sangiras as he is now, after the Test in the Tower of High Sorcery. ... it turned his hair and eyes blue, fanged teeth.. but he's still good looking, just in an exotic and VERY noticable, recognizable way..
Sangrias after the Test in the Tower of High Sorcery when you piss him off
and Sangrias before the Test administered in the Tower of High Sorcery..
Appearance - 14 (cute, "rugged good looks" but not model level ) - bluish, shoulder-length hair, blue eyes. Somewhat wiry build, wears a decorative elven chainmail underneath a deep-blue cloak.... Wields a Greatsword.
Likes gems and jewelry, dislikes jumping into something suddenly, unless there is no recourse. Wants to find his blood family and seek vengeance upon the murderer of Rastelli. Decent cook. Wary of attacks, and can be somewhat paranoid (to a point). Defensive, and quick to protect himself (so would you if you have a bunch of thieves/mages after you). Will try to avoid starting fights, and will end them as quickly as possible. Friendly with gnomes/dwarfs.
During downtime, is often fiddling with any precious items on his possession, such as necklaces or rings. (He REALLY loves the shiny stuff) Has few prejudices, except against the 'wealthy snobby sort'.
Has a few scars underneath his armor. Has a nagging 'curiousity'; if there's a unmarked button, he'll find out what it does eventually. Likes fish.
Worst thing ever to happen to him: Murder of Rastelli and fleeing for his life, leaving his blood family defenseless.
Best thing ever to happen to him: Managed to save his family from starvation by blind luck and self-sacrifice.
Sangrias 'Flak' Lynneth was born and raised by a poor family in Sancrist. The third of a family of four (three sons and a baby sister), his parents worked day and night to bring food to the table, the eldest brothers working at their side. Sangrias was often left to watch over his sister, and to cook what little arrived, leaving little time for friends and play.
It was not enough one season, and it seemed as they would starve in the coming months. While the eldest thought of ways to scrimp and save, Sangrias thought of a quicker solution.
The port city in which they lived in had little nobility, mostly Solamnic Knights and gnomes. However, one person stood out in Sangrias' mind: an attractive girl often seen 'slumming' with an elderly man, dressed in silk and other fine adornments. She always had a sapphire necklace, and the thought of how much it would fetch to Ol' Stubs (Sangria's only friend, a rather shady yet likeable dwarf fence with a dwarvishly long name) was too much for him to ignore.
One night, he stole away in the night, his sister following him at a distance. Bidding her to stay in the alleyways, Sangrias tiptoed in the servant's entrance and slipped through the kitchen, the cook still busy with dinner. He managed to make it to the dining hall when the door slowly creaked open. Quickly hiding between a nearby curtain and some furniture, two people walked in, casually chatting. Sangrias immediately recognized the elderly man, his presence rather imposing. The other, a tall and built man, shrouded in shadow, was rather mysterious and frightening, yet seemed to be cowed by the old man's words. As to why, Sangrias could care less, but as the man checked with the cook quickly, the shadowy figure gestured quickly and whispered some strange words, as if talking to himself. Soon, the woman returned, as several people now entered, waiting to be served.
As dinner was to begin, the elderly man so often seen before stood and gave a short speech of family legacy, despite threats of an inner revolt. While everyone in the room was enraptured, Sangrias had little in mind except the growing numbness in his leg. Desperate for something more interesting to catch his eye, he spied a glint of metal near the staircase. A crossbow, trained on the small girl wearing the sapphire necklace, was poised to fire. Reacting without thought, Sangrias leapt out in front of the bolt as it was fired.
After a second of surprise, everyone was suddenly in panic. Voices rang out, threats were issued, and all faded to black.
Awaking to a darkened room days later, the elderly man was sternly watching over him, along with several dark figures. Afraid for his life, he quickly rose to run, but the poison coursing through him had not left him yet. Assuring the boy no harm, the elderly man instead thanked him for foiling the assassination attempt. Asking Sangrias as to why he was there in the first place, the man was curious about his true intentions. Despite the dangerous position he was in, Sangrias answered truthfully (about needing the money for his family). The old man smiled and then motioned to one of the dark figures around him. Quickly leaving, he returned with Sangrias' sister, who immediately began crying on the poor boy's shoulder.
The elderly man smiled and acknowledged that the boy was special. "For saving my family, I shall save yours." The man introduced himself as the head of the Rastelli family, the organized crime leader of the surrounding area. Ol' Stubs had often talked of him in reverence, and now that very man has accepted him as his own flesh and blood. Although his parents had their misgivings about the Rastelli's , Sangrias managed to convince them that it was in their best interest. Although stealing was indeed a crime, it was a means of survival.
Life in crime didn't sit well with Sangrias. Rastelli assured him that they only exacted justice on those 'that could afford it'. However, time and time again, Sangrias would always second-guess himself and became increasingly troubled. He soon became regulated to 'protection' jobs, such as watching a goods delivery or undercover deals. Expressing interest in the renegade mage's art (which was nothing as he'd seen before), he learned of its uses despite the mage's warnings. After 4 years of difficult tutelage and secrecy, it all ended abruptly.
Rastelli was murdered in cold blood. Ol' Stubs managed to warn Sangrias that he was accused of the assassination before any others of the family found him. Begging him to flee on the next boat, Stubs gave him a few 'goods' he was about to sell before running out of sight.
Taking a ship to the mainland, Sangrias was troubled about everything, but most importantly his 'blood' family. If he was being sought, what's to stop the true assassin to use them to his leverage? Thoughts of their safety plagued him.
Upon reaching the mainland, Sangrias was greeted by a hooded figure, not familiar to him at all. If it was an assassin, they were unusually cordial about it. No, it was a wizard of the Tower of High Sorcery. Although they know little of the incident at Sancrist, they were indeed aware of the mages there, Sangrias one of them. Initially wary, Sangrias stayed his blade. The wizard then told him of the 'Test'. After initially refusing this 'killer pop quiz' he was warned so many times about before, Sangrias finally relented after questioning the wizard thoroughly.
The test itself was not for the faint of heart. While he would not speak of it, Sangrias faced more than darkness. Once the test was complete, Sangrias quickly fled as soon as was able, as his resolve was now stronger.
Gripping his spellbook tightly, he strapped his greatsword to his back and made way towards the New Sea. Although he had no idea what would befall him there, he only had his thoughts to fall on, as well as the visions that laid before him at the Tower of High Sorcery
