Hi guys..I touched on this in skype chats with you all but thought it would be good to re-post it here... this excerpt comes from page of the Dragonlance Campaign Setting sourcebook and is one of the three fundamental "cosmic laws" so to speak of Krynn... though it's called the Law of Paladine, all servants of the gods of Good (Eolaer once he finds his true calling as a Favored Soul, the Knight of Solamnia, Adam ) would be expected to follow it ... while Adam and the Knight have built-in reasons in their character concept to follow this rule.. nydhog just a thought, perhaps Eolaer feels it would be dishonorable to kill an enemy who's already surrendered? But to give you a heads up it is a rule he'd be expected to follow once he becomes a Favored Soul if not sooner than that...
To clarify, you're NOT expected to sit there and plead with the bad guy to change his ways if he takes a swing at you and pre-emptive strikes against bad guys (surprise attacks and so forth) are certainly not an "alignment violation" either... Again keep my skype chat in mind... if someone's coming at you with a sword or claw or what-not trying to kill you they're free game .. feel free to make those called shots, shoot 'em in the groin, go for the neck, whatever you like .. the gods of Good understand the need to fight Evil (Adam in the RP sense may protest on "moral grounds" as might the Knight if he feels it's "dishonorable" but technically Adam can remain a LG monk and the Knight can remain a LG knight even if their fellow PC's basically become meat-grinders mid-combat long as their lives are being threatened) ...
Once an evil opponent gives up however it's a different story.. even if he's total scum of the earth Eolaer, the Knight and Adam are morally obligated to not take his life ... again as an FYI DM's note type thing... it would be unfair of me as a DM to put PC's in this sort of position and then have released prisoners come back to haunt the PC's later on so, basically, freed prisoners do NOT come back to bite you in the butt or create problems for you later on... basically said prisoner is likely to be grateful and may even come over to your side later on ... at the very least the prisoner is going to hide himself away and not aid the side of "good" or "evil" , becoming non-involved so to speak...
Nine falls into a slightly different category... to get his druidic type spells he needs to have a patron deity, which he has already selected.. Zivilyn the "Tree of Life", a neutral aligned deity (see chapter four of the dragonlance campaign sourcebook ) ... followers of Neutral aligned deities have a bit more "wiggle room" and aren't obligated to follow the Law of Paladine... the neutral gods however are likely to want their followers to aid the side of Good in this case since the "balance" between good and evil is being threatened (basically evil.. the gods of darkness.. want to take over the world) . Also Nine bear in mind even if you're not obligated to spare prisoners if you "whack" one you'll face the wrath of Adam, the Knight and quite possibly Eolaer as well.. not to say that you ARE going to do such a thing Nine but just giving you a heads up ...
