In the movies you see people throw themselves in front of other people, saving the intended target from a bullet, a blast of fire, energy ray or what not... I'd like to introduce a similar mechanic for D & D 3rd edition. For lack of a better name I'm calling it a sacrifice move.
You can only protect targets from some sort of targeted sort of damage - any melee or missle attack or any spell-like effect that either calls for an attack roll on the caster's part or allows for a reflex save for half damage . The move goes like this :
- you can make a sacrifice move even after you've already taken your turn/acted in the combat round
- you can declare your sacrifice move even after damage has been rolled against the intended target
- make a dexterity check ... if you roll a "1" you're assumed to trip over your own two feet and fall prone, otherwise you can keep going
- move up to four times your normal movement rate - you do NOT provoke attacks of opportunity from opponents you pass as you normally would
- you end your move in front of the target of the attack -- if a reflex save is required it is assumed that the target not only makes it but takes NO damage from the effect
- you automatically take maximum damage from the effect and automatically fail any and all saving throws associated with said effect. If the effect is capable of scoring a "critical hit" (an arrow for example or a spell like acid arrow as another example) the effect is automatically assumed to score a critical hit .. whether or not a critical hit was scored you automatically take maximum damage possible from the effect. You also lose your turn on the next round of combat and you are assumed to be prone.
