You guys have probably noticed by now I tend to ask players right up front to make a spot or search roll if there's anything interesting rather than leaving it up to the player to request the roll.. one reason I do this is that I've found in past FG campaigns I've been in before if the DM doesn't do this then players start requesting search and spot checks for like every single mini-area they move into , kind of slows FG game sessions down .... and my greatest fear is player boredom (seriously, not joking here ! If anyone feels the dragonlance FG game sessions are going slow please please let me know, if no one says anything then I won't know there's a problem ! )
I treat sense motive rolls a bit differently however... in the vast majority of cases I don't ask you to make a sense motive roll simply because if I did so it would cue you in immediately to the fact that an NPC was suspicious in the first place .... if an NPC is genuinely trying to help you out or not a threat I may ask you to make a sense motive roll to figure that out, or if there's info I want to "transmit" to you about an NPC I might also request a sense motive roll in that situation... however if a PC is suspicious of an NPC or PC for some reason I leave it up to the player to make sense motive rolls (which are opposed as usual by the target's bluff skill if the target is in fact trying to pull a " fast one " on you ... see
www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/senseMotive.htm
and
www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/bluff.htm )
In other words if you're suspicious for some reason feel free to just go ahead and roll sense motive in FG ... in or out of the box your choice ( I know I know I should make it an " in the box" roll but I'll probably forget to remind players to do this in the first place )
