( This thread is assumed to take place immediately after this one
whatifdragonlancedm.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=forumroleplay&action=display&thread=818
See the link above for the plans of Zane, Draug and Forman to meet up with the human refugees at the end of the Old South Road.... also something else to keep in mind - no one's on horses... the terrain is simply too icy , snow-y and overally treacherous right now for horses to do you much good here... that was the reason the mule was killed when Foster twisted his head off and turned him into a fur coat for Rin ) ... As Serinda and Rin vanish a decision lies ahead of you - rest for the night before going on to find the human refugees? Or continue straight onwards? (note - if you don't rest for the night it qualifies as a "forced march" since you already travelled 8 hours earlier on today to get to the hill dwarf cabins/village in the first place - you know the place where the hill dwarf leader fell beard-first into the poo .. I'll need to roll Constitution checks for you as a result - given how many CON checks are required best for me to roll them - once per hour of marching - to see if you take subdual damage and basically march yourself into unconsciousness.. see "forced march" entry under
www.d20srd.org/srd/movement.htm#forcedMarch )Your dwarf guide Grist Coppertoe (from the hill dwarf village mentioned above) estimates it's about 40 miles to where the human refugees would most likely have stopped , the end of the Old South Road (see the attached map and the big old red arrow pointing from where you guys are right now to where the human refugees have more than likely stopped now that the road in front of them has come to an end) Grist is confident that given the small number in your group - four including himself as opposed to herding 1500 human refugees including the elderly and the children among them - that he can get you through the mountains somewhat quicker than normal given his knowledge of the territory and which paths are the easiest to take. (in game terms you wouldn't suffer from the travelling at the 3/4th's of your normal movement rate due to going through mountainous terrain - again see the web link given above regarding movement .. note also this only applies to small groups, no matter how skilled your dwarf guide is he can't make the elderly and children among the human refugees go any faster )Forman and Draug knows they can get to the refugees much faster than the others if they leave Zane and Grist behind - but it'll slow the two of them somewhat without their dwarven guide to show them the easier paths ( they'd be back to the travelling at 3/4th's of the normal rate through mountainous terrain again without Grist) and there's no way Grist can move as fast as Forman and Draug.. ... Forman and Draug can get to the refugees after 10 hours of travel.. if you travel at Grist and Zane's movement rate it'll take more time, perhaps 13 hours of travel. (see "table- movement and distance" at
www.d20srd.org/srd/movement.htm#forcedMarch - Forman has a 50 foot movement rate for being a monk and Draug travels at that rate in his wolf form )" So what's the plan ? " Grist asks the rest of you gruffly... " I"d recommend you all bed down for the night, won't do you much good if you march yourself so hard you fall flat on your face in a faint .. then start fresh in the morning... or are you all going to keep marching your fool selves anyways ? Zane nods at the dwarf, "I am going to rest for the evening. As much as I like walking all night, I need to rest and pray to Habbakuk. We can get an early start tomorrow and go for as long as we can though."

"I concur" remarks Draug trying to sound as intelligent as possible. He believes he's been given a bad rap being a wolf brained human man time to show how smart this wolf spirit real is he thought.

Forman sits down on the ground next to the Dwarf.
"I agree, we should rest for the night, if we really push hard tomorrow we may be able to reach them before we have to make camp, just have to see."
Forman stares at the Dwarf for a second or two and says.
"Did you know that most of the sentient population on this continent are infected with both internal and external vermin? That is why I shave my head and my beard, in fact I have shaved off almost all the hair on my entire body."
Forman watches the dwarf look at him strangely and cast glances at the other party members, the dwarf scoots slightly farther away from Forman.
Forman continues,
"Goblins and there variations, are in my personal opinion the worst. But don't think for one second that just because a creature does not have hair on it does not mean that it is not infested. NOO sir. I once grappled with a Lizard man that had these lice like things that were darting all around his scales, hiding in between them, under them."
Forman preforms a full body shiver. He roots in his pack and pulls out a bar of soap. Pours some water on his hands and begins to wash them with soap.

" You trying to say my beard is infested with vermin? " growls Grist Coppertoe looking at Forman.. " And NO I don't want your gods-damn mule jerky! " .... somehow it's not surprising he's decided to interpret Forman's comments in a way that could be considered offensive , given that he was one of the dwarves Draug beat unconscious in Stenkast's cabin ( though the dwarves did attack Draug first to be fair ) he doesn't seem too friendly towards Draug nor Forman given the monk made a move towards his leader ( blocked by Serinda and her magic sphere as you might recall last FG game session ) ... You've all noticed however the dwarf treats Zane with gruff respect.. he seems equally likely to hold a grudge however as most dwarves do, and for quite a long time at that.. (note - Draug spent most of his life in the forest with the wild elves so assume Draug isn't that familiar with dwarven psychology .. it's common knowledge to both Draug and Zane however )

(y'all feel free to respond to the irritated dwarf above in posts on this thread .. having said that I'm going to fast forward this RP thread a few days forward only because poor Udyr sez he wants in on this thread too so he can RP with you guys as a group ) Your grumpy dwarf guide gets you through the mountains on the first and second day of travel faster than you would have been able to travel without him for the most part though a few matters have to be straightened out... his little legs don't carry him as far as Zane's longer ones and not nearly as far as Draug's wolven paws or Forman's almost mystical ability to move at what seems to be faster than a normal human's speed ( in game terms Grist the dwarf has a whole movement rate of 20 feet vs Zane's 30 feet and Draug and Forman's 50 feet per round ) ... stubbornly insisting that he can travel as fast as the rest of you at first, after falling face down in the snow for the 20th time as he struggles to keep up with you Grist finally agrees to ride on Draug's back in wolf-form ... it takes a lot of patient convincing on Zane's part while Grist roars that no self respecting dwarf would be caught riding a wolf but the dwarf finally gives in, grumbling the entire time he's on Draug's back.. given how strong Draug is in this form Draug is able to carry the irritated dwarf's weight and still keep up ( in game terms the dwarf counts as "medium encumberance", slowing Draug to 40 feet but still letting Draug keep up with the 30 foot in general movement rate Zane is walking at and that Forman has presumably slowed himself down to since Forman didn't say otherwise when I asked about it in my first post ) The end of the first day of travel ends with you all in a cave bedding down for the night , Grist pouring over the disks of mishakal , utterly fascinated with them... Zane's half of his medallion of faith has already grown more to three halves full as has Grist's... After five hours of walking on the second day of travel since leaving the hill dwarf village you hear a gruff voice .. Zane and Draug recognizesit immediately though it's a voice Forman hasn't heard before. " Damn FOOL city folk - that isn't how you outfit yourself for travel in the mountains ! Mountains are full of snow and ice this time of year - you should be wearing thick heavy soled boots ! And where are your gloves ? ! ? " " Well when we were captured by the dragonarmies we didn't know they'd be taking us to a fortress in the mountains " stutters one of the male human refugees to the large bearded man shouting at him ... " Plenty of deer skin up here , why didn't you make your own boots ? " roars the bearded man at the human refugee " Well I don't really know how to - " stammers the human refugee. " BAH ! That's city folk for you .. useless ! " The large bearded man - easily six and a half feet tall and at least 300 pounds, probably more .. bends his head over the refugee's foot and murmurs something.. the word " Habbakuk" can be heard... the man's toes...the skin on them looking blackened, something Zane and Draug immediately recognize as a case of severe frostbite... shimmer, glow.. and the skin returns to a healthy pink color." " Come by here a few hours from now and I'll have a set of boots sewn up for you - moron " The big man snaps at the human refugee. " Y-y-you're a priest ! Another one of the heralds of the old gods .. praise be to them ! Thank you, if there's any way I can ever repay - " " GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE ! AND DON'T COME BACK FOR AT LEAST THREE HOURS ! " belows the large man... turning a shade paler with fear the human refugee nods and scampers away... Looking at the refugees the large man bellows " NEXT ! " .. there's a long line of refugees waiting to see the newcomer... the large fellow has a thick, unruly brown colored beard and an equally thick unruly mass of chest hair that can be seen peeping out from under his winter cloak despite being bald on top of his head... his skin is quite tan, indicating that he spends much of his time outdoors.. the symbol of Habbakuk - a blue phoenix on a silver circle - dangles around his neck. ( see below for a pic of the newcomer) The newcomer looks up .. nods at Draug with a touch of respect, looks Zane over without that much surprise at Zane's presence .. but his expression grows thunderous when he takes in Forman and Grist the dwarf.. " WHO THE HELL ARE YOU TWO ? ! ? " roars the newcomer at the top of his lungs. " And YOU " shouts the newcomer pointing at Zane " THIS is how you take care of city folk ? ! ? Leave these dumb sheep alone to fend for themselves ? ! ? You're lucky I got here - a flock of baby ducks could do a better care of fending for themselves in the wild ! " Christania, Rin's fiancee, eyes the newcomer with a frosty expression on her face.. " We have over a hundred plainsmen barbarians here who have been helping out - " " WHO HAVE TO BABYSIT FOURTEEN TIMES THAT NUMBER , 1400 CITY FOLK - 14 USELESS IDIOTS LIKE YOU FOR EVERY BARBARIAN ! " " Oh I'm SO sorry I wasn't born in the forest wiping my ass with leaves like you mr. wild man " Christania shouts back at him putting a finger in his face ... " Let's all try to be calm about this " says Laurana the elven princess (Zane's fiancee) holding up her hands - she speaks in weary tones as if she's been trying to keep the peace for a while... " GET THAT FINGER OUT OF MY FACE ! " roars the newcomer at Christania ... " I ASKED YOU A QUESTION - WHO THE HELL ARE YOU ? ! ? " repeats the newcomer turning to glare at Forman. " The man could be a dwarf" says Grist , admiration in his gruff voice as he looks up at the newcomer.

Draug barks excitedly refraining from changing shape due to the unaccustomed dwarf weight on his back. Tail wagging vigorously eyes widened with excitement Draug conveys a happy welcome to the visitor Udyr.

Zane shakes his head, strange as it seems another person from his past shows up here. "Yelling as usual, Udyr? Remember that night at the Inn, you toned down your voice and got yourself a friendly admirer." Zane hides the smile about that night, hitting the drink a little too hard. "But yes, it was a mistake to leave them on their own." Zane looks at the group of people around him. "If we had kept them with us they would be in a place of relative safety and not suffering like they are. But we the sooner we get moving, the sooner we can get these people to a relative safe place. And don't mind Grist," Zane points at the dwarf, "it's not very often that we have a priest of Reorx in our midst. Then again, I think you two would get along nicely."
Zane walks over to Laurana and embraces her. "I'm sorry we left you on your own. I'm sorry I left you." Zane feels her shiver and calling upon Habbakuk, he casts the spell needed to help endure the elements. "What has happened since we have left? Have either Rin or Serinda returned yet?"

Forman walks up to the incredibly loud man and says,
"Forman of the Wheel, Initiate of the Order at your service.", and performs a neat bow.
Forman turns to Christina and says,
"You my dear are as lovely as ever. Have you word from your flocked intended?"

"AND WHAT POSSSIBLE SERVICE COULD YOU PROVIDE ME?!" Udyr yells at Forman, but before Forman could answer he turns back to the long line, "I SAID NEXT! IF YOU DONT GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE NOW..."
The next person comes over wearily. Udyr eyes him over and cures what ales him grumbling while doing it. "NOW GET OUTTA MY SIGHT!"
"NEXT!"
Turns to Zane, "YOU JUST GOING TO STAND THERE, OR AM I GOING TO HAVE TO DO ALL THIS MYSELF?! ITS YOUR GODS-DAMN MISTAKE I'M CLEANING UP, SO GET YOUR ASS OVER HERE!"

Forman grins at Uldyr for a second then turns to Zane and says with a grin,
"I like him, very loud!! Easy to find in a crowd."
Forman addresses Christina,
"Rin and Serinda have gone to scout the Dragon Army. They have some sort of plan to charm the Commander to call off the pursuit. It took us a few days to get here (OOC correct me if I am wrong) I Would think that they would be finishing their mission about the same time that we got here. If they do not show up soon then we need to go fetch them."
Forman looks idely around for a minute and says,
"In the meantime I guess that I will make myself useful."
Forman begins to walk down the line of refugees and starts a makeshift triage. Moving people with more severe aliments and injury's to the front of the line. Using his healing skill and kit to provide aid to those who he can help on the spot. Saying witty little thinks like,
"Hello my name is Forman, that was my mule you ate the other night."
He also teaches several of them to sing one of his favorite songs,
Take a bath every day. Let your odor float away. Better keep clean. Sniff, Sniff, Sniff see what I mean!!!

It took us a few days to get here (OOC correct me if I am wrong) ! (Yep that's right, 2 days of travel from the hill dwarf village - you arrive after 5 hours of travel on the second of that two days ) Small children giggle at the bald headed monk and try to shout the words back to him.. weary, shivering parents smile and nod a thank you to Forman for lifting their children's spirits... Laurana seems to meld into Zane's form, clinging to him.. finally she lets him go looking up at him with her large green eyes.. " I missed you" .. she smiles a promise up at him silently letting him know how he'll be spending his night then adds out loud " There are other ways of keeping me warm lover." Looking over at the large man she frowns and adds " You know him? He showed up out of nowhere to help out and started bellowing orders - and another priest of the true gods at that ! How did he know where to find us ? He knows what he's doing but " she adds quietly murmuring into Zane's ear " He's a REAL pain in the ass, it's taken all my effort just to keep him and Christania from killing each other... " (anyone who wants to try to overhear Laurana murmuring this to Zane feel free to make a Listen check and post the results here using the invisible castle dice roller
invisiblecastle.com/roller/
and post the link code and bbc code here in the forum ) Christania takes a break from shouting at Udyr long enough to bend down and scratch Draug's ears saying loudly enough for everyone to hear .. " Who's a good boy? Yes you are ! Don't you worry about the big-beard--hollering-jerk over there who's ignoring you I still love you, yes I do ! Did you use that nose of yours to track down those dwarves? Yes you did ! Did you eat any of the dwarves?" she says this in the high pitched friendly sing-song voice one adopts when speaking to a dog ... she then looks up at Forman " Oh, look it's one of the only other two men I've met in my entire life who have no interest in getting laid " Christania notes Forman's presence then gives Draug an admonishing look - presumably Draug is the other man she's speaking of other than Forman.. " WIERDEST wolf I ever met , animals are supposed to jump each other's bones just like that without even thinking Mr. Animal Spirit" a stern tone enters her voice as she addresses Draug , then she looks at Forman again " As for you.. you just don't know what you're missing." She's been manuveuring herself and Draug closer to Forman during her entire conversation - hr smile turns mischeivious as she suddenly reaches for Forman's arm, lunging at him - she doesn't have any weapons drawn and given the " you just don't know what you're missing" comment it seems obvious what she's going to try to do. (I'm going to treat an attempt to plant a surprise kiss on someone's lips as a grapple attack ... we start with Forman and Christania rolling initiative.... Forman just a reminder you have a +4 bonus to your init. roll normally so go ahead and roll 1d20+4 at the invisible castle dice roller I mentioned above and posting the results here as I mentioned above )

Zane gives Laurana a playful smile, "I know there are other ways to keep you warm, but," glancing around, "with all the people here, I don't think they want a show. Besides I really can't shift forms here and I know you like the tickle." Zane watches for the reaction before adding, "He can be a loud guy, Udyr, but he is a good man. If you can get past the loud and louder voice settings, he can charm you. But, from what I know of Christina, I'm surprised that it hasn't come to blows. You must be a good mediator."
