((This is how Sumlanna got her first real job.))
A few weeks had past since Sumlanna's father had burned her home and left. She didn't care that he didn't try to find her after she swam off like that. All she cared about was proving she was the better adult. The money she took from home lasted her a little less than a week, she wasn't the good with money yet and ended up spending it on the more expensive foods. The tavern-keep didn't mind when she couldn't pay for her meal and just sent her to work cleaning and told her that if she was ever struggling for food to just go to him and he's set her to work. She spent a week working for him off and on on the days she couldn't get any work. Until a woman Sumlanna had seen before approached her on the street. It was a fish monger her father always avoided, but would never tell her why. The woman looked down to Sumlanna with a smile.
"My what's a pretty Dargonesti such as yourself doing here? You should have been scooped up by another fishmonger long ago if they weren't such slack-jawed and witless idiots. I have a job for you little one, well two actually. If you want them follow me into the tavern and we'll get you something to eat."
Before Sumlanna could say anything the woman walked into the tavern, leaving Sumlanna a bit dumb founded. Shaking off her amazement, she slowly made her way into the tavern unsure what the woman would ask of her. The woman quickly waved her over to a table with a big smile. As sumlanna set her self down the woman pulled out a coin-purse and placed three steel pieces on the table.
"Go ahead and get anything of up to that price you feel like. I'm going to need you healthy for the jobs I have in mind."
Sumlanna's eyes grew wide as she stared at the steel pieces and she quickly ordered a large meal. looking back to the woman as she waited for her food she smiled meekly.
"Th-Thank you."
The woman nodded and smiled brightly at her.
"You are most welcome. Now about the jobs I have for you. I suppose you want to know what they are right?"
Sumlanna nodded to the woman almost fearing what the jobs could be. She wasn't so naive to know that some people masked odd requests with good will.
"Good, the first job is to clean the fish that are brought in to me. You won't get paid like a normal person, you'll get a place to stay and food to eat for that job. It won't be easy but I have this feeling you know what your doing when it comes to fish. The second job is to help me at the stand, you don't have to help sell or anything like that just be there and show the fish off. It's odd but I think with your looks my sales will go up. You will earn money for that that job a small percentage of each fish sold. so how does that sound?"
Sumlanna nodded eagerly as he food was placed before her. She started to eat like she hadn't in a long time. The woman chuckled at Sumlanna as she ate.
"I wonder if my son would have been anything like you? He'd be about your age right now."
Sumlanna stopped eating and gulped the food in her mouth down.
"Did he die when her was born?"
Quickly Sumlanna realized what eh just said and looks down.
"I'm sorry I didn't mean to."
The woman shook her head and chuckled once again.
"It's alright you're young, I think you're allowed one social taboo per day. As for if he is dead no, he's alive he was just taken from me at birth. I wish I could take him back but he wouldn't know who I am now."
Sumlanna looked to her food and felt that she couldn't eat anymore. Not for the fact that she was full, more because she had felt guilty.
"Come now it seems your done, let me show you to your home."
The woman stood up and and held her hand out for Sumlanna. Taking her hand Sumlanna was lead to the docks where a small shack smelling of fish was.
"This is where you shall be staying.... I know it's not quite what you we're used to, but at least you won't be sleeping on that rock anymore."
Sumlanna nodded and then turned to hug the woman. Surprised the woman chuckled and patted Sumlanna on the head.
"Now go get some sleep, you start working tomorrow and I think you'll have your hands full. Don't worry a hammock is already in there, as well as a change of clothes."
Sumlanna ran into the shack waving back to the woman.
