First off... pirateking (Udyr the druid) and darkalloy (Rin the bird man) - please DON'T take this personally.. this is totally my fault , I tend to invite this sort of thing when I keep asking for clarification/feedback on rules I myself don't know...
Having said that... there were several times when I wanted to say something live , over skype, during yesterday's (Tues Aug 16th's) FG game session , speaking as a DM that is to address another player re: their actions or to ask a question - but I couldn't do it because darkalloy and pirateking were speaking already over skype... it looks like pirateking is having a lot of FG headaches as far as getting his FG character sheet to cooperate with him so I can understand the need to troubleshoot it - the problem is, it's getting in my way as a DM during the FG game sessions and slowing me down, which in turn slows down the entire FG game session as a whole ...
As a favor... perhaps darkalloy and pirateking could text each other instead on skype regarding pirateking's FG character sheet not working properly? I realize typing is a lot slower but at least that way it keeps the voice channel "open" for me for FG game sessions ... pirateking as a temporary measure I find the following command to be very useful in FG .. if you know what to roll ... say if you wanted to roll 1d6+6 for example... in FG you can type in /die 1d6+6 and it will roll 1d6 for you then add six to the result... you can do that as a "quick fix" when I ask you for a die roll then work with darkalloy on a more permanent fix to the FG issues you're having.
Also .. and again no one is blaming darkalloy or pirateking here, particularly darkalloy since he's only trying to help ... the other problem I'm seeing is a certain amount of back and forth discussion on what rules apply to a situation in FG - to be more specific darkalloy will say rule " X " applies, pirateking will say no, rule " Y " applies and again the FG game session gets slowed down as a result.. again completely my fault for asking for player feedback on rules and not knowing them as a DM to begin with .. however I'd like to implement this solution ...
Darkalloy has been with the campaign since it started over a year ago and I've found he's been right like 99 percent of the time when I ask him about a rule (long as it's an actual quote from a rulebook as opposed to something that needs intepretation and has some "gray area", and even with the gray area situations he's often correct ) .. this isn't to say that pirateking doesn't know what he's talking about , it's just that I've come to rely on darkalloy as my "rules guru" so to speak, along with solardawn - I tend to get a quicker answer from darkalloy however since he can speak aloud over skype
What I'd like to propose is this - if I'm uncertain about the rules I get a quick rules calling from darkalloy and leave it at that, without pirateking or other players doing research right there at that very moment and saying " No the rules say " Y " " , darkalloy says " No the rules say " X " " and we end up with a long rules debate .. I'm not accusing pirateking of being a rules lawyer by any means but this is what I meant when I warned new players (waaaayyy back when I first recruited you pirateking don't know if you remember or not ) that I try to avoid the whole rules lawyer thing - what I was trying to say was that if you're the kind of player who wants a rule hashed out immediately in the middle of an FG game session for a concrete final answer - no matter how long it takes - then I'm not the right kind of DM for you .. I prefer more of a quick ruling to get the game going again - I WILL make a note in FG right there and then (in the chat log/text window) to look it up later on and when I go over the chatlog later on I'll do research on the rule in question, post my findings in the forum then invite discussion on it - with the understanding that if someone posts something contrary to what I posted I'll need a web link or page number from a WOTC book to back the contrary finding up ...
Also darkalloy and pirateking, if we can avoid stuff not completely germane to the FG game session at hand - like what character build in D&D best kicks ass and so forth - that would be great too ... the occasional ooc comment is fine like the ones darkalloy makes but when it turns into a prolonged conversation and /or conversations that take place several times, again it keeps me from being able to use the voice function in skype to help me run the FG game session ..
One last thing i do want to emphasize.. if you have a question about what's going on in-game as far as what's described to you and so forth please by all means feel free to voice it over skype ! Pirateking often has questions about the maps and what they depict, what the actual physical lay out is of the dungeon you're in and so forth - and that's totally fine ! If pirateking is wondering about it that probably means other players are too so feel free to go on using skype for that sort of thing ...
And if I've given any offense by posting this I apologize PROFUSELY, I tried to be as diplomatic as possible but it's still a tricky thing to discuss without at least the possibility of offending someone .. so for that I apologize.. just wasn't sure how else to say it ..
Everyone feel free to comment and/or post away on this
